Growth and development is a human need, there is something in each one of us that wants to be more and be better.
Change is always happening whether we like it or not. In the world around, change is a constant e.g. technological developments, the environment, politics, social awareness, the natural world.
Though we may not be aware of it, we are changing too. Our bodies adapt and develop based on the pressures exerted on them, our minds are constantly taking in information and using it to develop greater understanding and wisdom. So it's not just our outer world which changes, it's our inner world too.
Just as we can intelligently influence the way changes occur in our environment, through thoughtful and careful planning, we can also influence the way our minds and bodies develop.
Humans are the most adaptable species on the planet, a reason we are so successful. There is no other species that has managed to thrive in such a wide variety of habitats. This ability to adapt can be harnessed and used to help us become the people we want to be.
If you consistently place a physical pressure or strain on the body, it will adapt in order to cope better. It will strengthen muscle, bone, joints, tendons and ligaments in order to become more efficient at the task. I am amazed by some of the changes we see in our clients at our physio clinic. Similarly, if you demand of the mind and exert a pressure on it to become better at memory based tasks or attention/concentration, for example, it will adapt through adjusting the neural networks in your brain, creating more links and connections to other brain cells in order to improve performance (this is known as neuroplasticity or neural plasticity - it may even produce new brain cells - neurogenesis.
However, the mind-body system, as I mentioned before, is very efficient. It isn't going to waste precious resources maintaining systems that are not required. So if you spend six months
working out in the gym in order to build muscle and then stop, the body will, in time, strip the muscle back to what is needed. Scientists believe it is similar for neural networks.
If you plan to make great changes in 2018, approach them with wisdom and put in place routines and practices which you know you'll be able to maintain. Perform the new routine daily, if possible, and watch how your incredible and magnificent mind-body system adapts and develops.
Be patient though, you may not see the change you are looking for immediately but if your plan is good and your execution is consistent, you will develop. It's no good going crazy in the gym for the first month and then getting injured or bored and then losing motivation. The same goes for getting trimmer or fitter or smarter or more disciplined or more confident or more calm...
So trust your mind-body system, it is incredibly efficient, always changing, totally dynamic and evolving all the time. If you intelligently place deliberate pressures on it, it cannot help but rise and meet the challenge of developing and growing. In turn, you will become more and more, the person you want to be.
